Snoring While Sleeping: A Symptom of Something More Serious?

Have you been told that you snore a lot while you sleep? Although snoring may seem harmless or even funny, the truth is that in some cases it can be a symptom of a   more serious health problem  that you shouldn’t ignore.

Why Do We Snore?

Snoring occurs when air cannot flow freely through the throat and nose during sleep. This causes the tissues to vibrate, generating that characteristic sound. Among the most common causes of snoring are:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Overweight

  • Alcohol consumption before bed

When Should You Worry?

Although many people snore occasionally, when snoring is constant or very loud, it could be a sign of a health problem known as  sleep apnea . This condition causes pauses in breathing during the night, which reduces sleep quality and can increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and more.
